On Saturday, the last full day of music at SXSW 2024, the exodus had begun early in the afternoon as many people caught flights out of town. Meanwhile, St. Patrick’s Day celebrants in emerald attire took to the streets of Austin. But don’t leave just yet! There were still incredible sounds emanating from Austin’s venues. Here are the highlights from March 16.
Friko at Cheer Up Charlie’s summoned a storm with their powerful performance. The Chicago-based band, typically a duo, transformed into a classic power trio on stage, delivering intense vocals and raw emotion. They closed their set with “Get Numb to It!”, a standout from their recent ATO Records debut album.
Chanel Beads, an experimental act from New York, impressed the crowd at Mohawk with their melodic phrases and unique sound. Their post-midnight performance at the Creek and the Cave had the audience dancing and raving.
Cinema Hearts from Washington, D.C., made a lasting impression with their retro-style prom-queen vocals and garage-punk music. Singer-songwriter Caroline Weinroth shared personal anecdotes between songs, engaging the audience and closing with a spirited cover of the Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog.”
YHWH Nailgun delivered a captivating and somewhat unsettling performance at the Creek and the Cave, making music that was simultaneously danceable and intense. The New York group left a strong impression on the crowd with their unique sound and dynamic stage presence.
Greg Freeman, a new artist making classic rock in 2024, won over fans with his high vocal register and rich musical compositions. His performance at the Creek and the Cave showcased his talent and captured the essence of classic rock.
Birthday Girl, an unsigned alt-rock band from Brooklyn, impressed attendees at Empire Garage and Control Room with their high-energy performance. Singer Eva Smittle and her bandmates put on a memorable show, drawing cheers from the crowd.
Illenium closed out the SXSW festivities at Billboard’s the Stage at Moody Amphitheater with an electrifying set. The DJ incorporated confetti cannons and pyrotechnics into his performance, creating a visually stunning show that kept the audience engaged and entertained.
