Share

The United States Supreme Court justices are set to face major challenges regarding abortion, guns, and the Jan. 6 Capitol attack when they return to the bench in 2024. As of mid-December 2023, the court has already heard important cases on a variety of issues including taxes, social media, and the administrative state, with decisions expected by the end of June. They have also agreed to hear 32 additional cases and have the opportunity to add more in the early weeks of the new year.

These cases include the possibility of former President Donald Trump’s immunity from suit for actions taken while in office, a pair of challenges to the most common form of abortion – medication abortion, and a case involving charges against Jan. 6 defendant Joseph Fischer under a 2002 law. There are also significant cases concerning the administrative law doctrine known as Chevron deference and a prohibition on bump stocks.

These cases represent critical issues facing the nation and will have far-reaching implications in areas such as presidential accountability, reproductive rights, government regulation, and gun control. The decisions made by the Supreme Court in the coming term will shape the legal landscape of the United States for years to come.
